Pittsburgh, 15 February 2011 - ConverteamPower conversion specialist Converteam confirms its leadership as a supplier of integrated power solutions to the U.S. Navy for the Integrated Power System (IPS) on the third and final Zumwalt-class destroyer, DDG 1002, with the award of an additional $22 million contract for mission critical systems. The original contract was awarded in June 2010.

The Zumwalt-class destroyer is the next-generation of multi-mission destroyers tailored for land attack and littoral dominance, combined with a strong anti-surface and anti-air capability. The destroyer features an IPS for propulsion and weapons. Despite its 600ft. length, the radar signature will be more akin to a fishing boat and sound levels compared to the Los Angeles-class nuclear submarine—thanks to its electric propulsion. Each destroyer is expected to cost $3 billion.

In total, the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has awarded Converteam $31.9 million for the DDG 1002 High Voltage IPS, common to propulsion and weapons. The system includes the baseline tactical advanced induction motor with its associated VDM25000 drives, and the harmonic filters for the main and auxiliary turbine-generators.

Paul Thompson, Director Navy Programs for Converteam explains, “We consider our long-standing relationship with the U.S. Navy an illustration of their confidence in our capabilities to fully integrate the complex power generation, distribution and propulsion systems, one of the most power dense systems of its kind, on board this revolutionary multi-mission vessel.”

Converteam is currently under contract to deliver two ship sets of hardware to the General Dynamics Bath Ironworks shipyard in Bath, Maine and a further half ship set for testing at the Navy’s land based test site in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition to hardware, Converteam is responsible for the high voltage system design, commissioning and testing at the land based test site.
All work will be performed at Converteam’s Pittsburgh facility, and is expected to be completed by August 2012.
