Start-up Converters, Soft Starters

Application for Power Generation, Oil & Gas

Multi-Motors Start-up Converters are able to:

  • Soft start any motor from any drive and reduce the impact on the power system
  • Synchronize the motors with the utility supply and run some or all motors on the utility supply at constant speed
  • Run one motor at variable speed to allow process optimization.

The benefit of the variable speed drive is smooth motor starting. The VSD controls the rotor field (through the exciter) and the stator current to provide a smooth starting profile without exceeding rated Volts and Amps, thereby protecting the motor against overheating. Control the motor current is also important whenever power system grids are weak or the plant is located at the end of a long transmission line. In addition to smooth starting, the VSD provides smooth motor synchronizing.

All motors can operate across the line, or one can remain connected to the VSD for variable speed operation if required.
