In order to take full advantage of variable-speed AC drives, their high reliability, excellent control and overload capability, Converteam has developed a DC common bus system, in which all AC drives are fed from a single common DC source. One advantage stems from the fact that any regenerating drives send their power to the motoring drives via the DC link. This provides an economic initial cost; also during operation, it reduces the overall AC power input and even allows the drives to operate during temporary total loss of the AC supply.
