Variable Speed Power Generation for Pump Storage Hydro Plants

Converteam offers high performance solutions for pump storage power plants, optimizing the efficiency of thermal power plants. Using a 300MW induction machine with a rotor side 100MVA Cyclo Converter, for the first time in this dimension, speed and active power are adjustable in a certain range, during pump operation as well as during generator operation.

Variations of consumption in the grid, which cannot be balanced by slow reacting thermal power plants, will be counter-balanced by quick reacting pump storage plants using Converteam’s advanced technology. Consequently, thermal power plants are continuously able to operate independently in the most efficient way. Hydro Power plants using synchronous generators are supplied with synchrodrives.
