High-Speed Drives

Application for Oil & Gas

High-Speed Drives are a key component of gas extraction, transport and storage applications. The conventional designs are based on a compressor driven by an electrical machine via a gearbox. A more up-to-date design uses High-Speed Medium Voltage Induction Motor and Compressor in the same casing. The benefits of this High-Speed Drive solution are higher reliability and higher efficiency due to direct coupling with no gearbox.

Converteam has unmatched references in High-Speed Drives with more than 80 installations since 1992.

There are two different High-Speed Drive solutions:

  • Standalone solution where the motor and the compressor are housed in separate casings
  • Integrated solution where the motor and the compressor are housed in the same casing. In this case, motor cooling depends entirely on the process.
Features of Converteam solution Customer Benefits
More compact (50% footprint reduction vs. geared solution):
• reduced motor size and weight
• no gearbox
• no need for auxiliaries (e.g.: air cooler, oil lube system, etc)
• easier installation
Lower CAPEX:
• for both equipment and installation
Higher reliability and availability:
• no gearbox -> fewer spare parts required
• use of magnetic bearings (no wear parts)
Lower OPEX:
• lower maintenance and unavailability costs
Higher efficiency:
- compared to mechanical solutions (gas & steam turbines or hydraulic coupling
Lower OPEX:
• energy savings
Environmentally friendly:
• no gas emission (integrated solution)
• no seal leakage
• no bearing lube oil (magnetic bearing)
• low noise (-50%)
• low vibration (subcritical speed rotor design)
Lower CAPEX and OPEX:
• no additional equipment
• no green tax
