Converteam is at the forefront of technology in the development of advanced machines. Converteam has a proven track record of manufacturing High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) machines for various specialist applications which could be extended to naval applications when the technology becomes sufficiently mature. Similarly, Converteam has a track record of building permanent magnet machines for generation but does not recommend their use in propulsion motors because under fault conditions with a trailing shaft the motor could sustain the fault by feeding it with current. For the interim, Converteam has developed a high power density, low noise, high shock withstand propulsion motor using the Active Stator principle. This Advanced Propulsion Motor is designed to be supplied with DC, or AC, hence increasing the potential architecture for distribution systems.
Converteam has developed and demonstrated a DC Architecture which complements the Advanced Propulsion Motor, and provides a more rugged system using Zonal Power Supplies.
A further example of advanced technology is the successful development and demonstration of an Electromagnetic Catapult using energy stores for the provision of pulse power and advanced Linear Induction Motors. This system can be scaled up to launch full size, manned aircraft, from aircraft carriers.
