Traditionally, propulsion of LNG carriers was based on dual fuel boilers and steam turbines. With the new coming Dual Fuel Engine, most of the main LNG actors are now convinced that Electric Propulsion is the solution.
Main benefits from using Converteam electric propulsion
- More flexibility
- Higher availability thanks to a high level of reliability and redundancy
- Environment friendliness (reduced exhaust emissions)
- Easy maintenance
Large twin-skeg design LNGCs for Knutsen, BG and TMT, equipped with Converteam propulsion medium-speed induction motors supplied by PWM MV7000 converters, are already in operation.
Also available: a transformerless solution with slow-speed induction motors.
Parts of the propulsion system can feed large auxiliary motors as cargo pumps or reliquefaction companders and / or providing cold ironing 50-60 Hz conversion facility.
