Converteam Controls For Submarine Weapons Handling Cranes
Rugby, 7 September 2010 – Converteam has been awarded contracts totaling around £2.6 million to provide sophisticated electrical systems for explosives handling cranes at RNAD (Royal Naval Armaments Depot) Coulport on Loch Long in Scotland.
The overhead gantry cranes are used for handling weapons for the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet and are currently undergoing extensive upgrading and refurbishment by SPIE Matthew Hall as main contractor.
Converteam is providing crane control and monitoring systems together with AC and DC drives which power the cranes and the control cab, as well as special fail-safe systems which ensure that, in the unlikely event of a failure, the cranes degrade to the safest possible condition. With reliability and safety being of the highest importance, Converteam’s power and control systems are extensively duplicated in order to main-tain crane functionality even in the unlikely event of any single point equipment failure.
The new systems will be delivered and commissioned by the end of 2010.
Converteam has developed a leading expertise in the field of crane integrated electrical solutions refurbishment.
