Converteam provided a prototype of a 3.7MW Direct Drive PMG, which has been successfully installed and tested and is now in operation since 2008. A Direct Drive Generator runs at a very low speed (< 20 rpm) and can be rated Low or Medium Voltage. These solutions provide the advantage of very high reliability for the full drive train (no gearbox, half the components), combined with an increased robustness of the generator. They have a higher efficiency at partial load, which enables improved return on investment for the end user under every wind condition. They are particularly well adapted for Offshore Wind Turbines. This option also provides a reduction in overall maintenance and potentially weight by eliminating the gearbox.
