Wind Technology - Hybrid Permanent Magnet Generators

Converteam has supplied the first Hybrid PMG solution, with a prototype running successfully since 2004. This type of solution, which works with one or two stages of gearbox (between 80 rpm and 500 rpm), enables increased reliability of the whole drive train compared to fully geared solutions. The key advantage of the intermediate speed PMG is to allow owners of existing wind turbine knowledge to optimize the total materials used in the overall electromechanical structure and make best use of their intellectual property to achieve lowest capital cost.

Characteristics Customer Benefits
  • Fully-fed Permanent Magnet Generators
  • One or two stages of gear box (between 80 rpm and 300 rpm)
  • LV or MV
  • Together with AC/AC or AC/DC converter
  • Gain in reliability due to elimination of one or two stages of gearbox
  • Within existing nacelle design, ability to make a step change in generator technology (PMG versus DFIG)
  • Full grid compliance due to fully fed solution
  • High intrinsic reliability of generator
  • Higher efficiency at partial load than geared solutions
