Converteam extends its capabilities and solutions into new challenges dedicated to subsea facilities: in 2007, Converteam signed a contract for the engineering, procurement, construction and testing of the pilot electrical package for the Ormen Lange subsea gas compression station at great depth.
Ormen Lange is a gas field located 120km off the northwest coast of Norway in water depths between 850 and 1100 meters. Production started in October 2007. Later, in the production phase (2015), offshore compression will be required to maintain production plateau and to recover the anticipated gas volumes.
The Converteam pilot, installed in 2010, is based on:
- a 12MW 11,000 rpm high-speed motor, fed by our MV7000 Variable Speed Drive, to pilot the compressor
- a 500kW motor for a pump
- all subsea auxiliaries to power the whole package.
This solution has been specifically designed to operate 900 meters below sea, with hard constraints such as functioning reliably and maintenance-free for a minimum of 5 years.
The Ormen Lange station will include four parallel compressor trains, identical to the current pilot. If subsea compression is qualified, this alternative will represent a cost-effective alternative to an offshore platform.
