Converteam to Double Power with New Drives for C. D. Wälzholz

Berlin, July 12, 2011 - Converteam has been awarded the revamping of the tandem mill of C.D. Wälzholz GmbH & Co. KG at its "Nord" plant in Hagen, Germany. The new drives will double the drive performance and significantly boost production. International steelmaker C. D. Wälzholz is headquartered in Germany and is one of the market leaders for cold-rolled and heat-treated steel strips and sections.

Converteam will supply two 8MW medium-voltage line converters and four 6MW medium-voltage machine converters for the four rolling stands. The converters from the MV7000 family will feed the four new 3.2MW main drive motors of the rolling stands. Three additional MD2000 low-voltage converters will supply the coiler drive systems including a new 650kW motor for the payoff reels and a 1,200kW motor for the coilers.

The order also includes the plant’s safety and technological controls, measurement technologies (thickness measuring gauges) and the complete Level-2 automation. In 2010 Converteam had already modernized the data acquisition, control and HMI functionalities. The plant’s modernizing of the movement control system was accomplished by Converteam early 2011.

"With this new contract C.D. Wälzholz renews its trust in Converteam and its technology. The customer has been convinced by the last year’s successful integration of the movement and drive control systems combined with a significantly enhanced operational safety of the tandem mill", said Jürgen Radke, Sales Director, Metals at Converteam.

Delivery and commissioning are scheduled for summer 2012.
