Converteam's Favorite Uncle

Rugby, 6 August 2010 – Houston-based offshore contracting company Cal Dive International, Inc. has awarded Converteam a major contract to provide a state-of-the-art dynamic position (DP) control system for the saturation diving vessel “Uncle John”.

Built in the late 1970’s Uncle John was the world’s first purpose designed and built semi-submersible dive support vessel. Today Uncle John operates primarily in the Gulf of Mexico providing the offshore community with a flexible and reliable platform for pipelay, coring, well intervention and construction in addition to its originally envisaged saturation diving role.

Converteam has maintained its relationship with this favorite uncle ever since it was on the drawing board in the 1970s and has been the provider of several generations of DP control system ever since.

The Converteam DP control system is a sophisticated computer system which interfaces with Uncle John’s propulsion and maneuvering system in order to counteract environmental forces and to ensure that the platform maintains a stable position throughout offshore operations – whilst avoiding a costly and time consuming anchoring operation.

Converteam supply its C-Series of DP equipment in a configuration known as “duplex”. Such a configuration ensures that single instances of system failure do not jeopardize personnel safety, the environment and valuable equipment and permits critical operations to be suspended in an orderly fashion.

The new system will be installed and commissioned during 2011.
