Electromagnetic Catapult

Converteam has continued its development program of linear motor technology ultimately aimed at producing an electromagnetic catapult for use onboard an aircraft carrier.

The latest element of this program has been to demonstrate not only the controlled acceleration of a load but also the braking of the load using the electromagnetic linear motors. This potentially enables the linear motor to be used for both aircraft launch and recovery operations.

The results have been extremely impressive and operation of the catapult and braking of the shuttle was demonstrated in October 2009.

Development of our linear motor technology continues and new Low Voltage linear motors with reduced end effect coils will be delivered in early 2010 paving the way for the design of medium voltage linear motors which will significantly increase the power of the catapult.

Currently Converteam has the technology available to offer this exciting electromagnetic launch system for unmanned air vehicles in either fixed or mobile applications. This technology developed for this accurate control linear motor system could also be used in a variety of other applications such as rollercoasters or handling equipment.
