The ALSPA CL9000 Cycloconverter drive system is especially suitable for large, low-speed rolling stand and winding engines in mines. The cycloconverter with a synchronous machine can handle perfectly very high overloads and field-weakening ratings. More specific properties for the CL 9000 are:

• no link cicuit
• simple converter circuit
• 4 quadrant operation
• power range of up to 100MVA
• control range of up to 1: 1000
• very good control dynamics
• high torque over the full speed adjustment range

The maximum speed possible with cycloconverter drives fed from a 50/60Hz mains is limited to 600 / 720 rpm. This limit is due to the machine, which requires at least 4 poles in order to constitute a sensible design for a rolling- mill motor, and to the maximum frequency of 20/24Hz which can be achieved with cyloconverter.
