Copper Bottomed Success for Converteam
Rugby, 30 June 2010 – Converteam has been awarded a £7m+ contract by FLSmidth for the supply of electrical equipment for a major copper mine upgrade in the Middle East.
Converteam’s motors, variable speed drives and transformers will power the massive expansion of the new, 7-million ton capacity, copper concentration plant which is located at the mine.
Copper concentration involves subjecting the raw ore to several refinement processes beginning with size reduction inside vast rotating drums known as SAG mills (Semi-Autogenous Grinding, i.e. mills using steel balls in addition to large rocks for grinding) and ball mills.
The primary grinding mill is a 32-foot diameter SAG mill which comprises a rotating drum that tumbles large rocks and steel balls to break up the raw ore and will be powered by Converteam’s MV7000 drives. The SAG mill process is followed by two 20-foot ball mills where the final size reduction takes place to liberate the value copper minerals from the waste rock ready for separation.
Delivery of the equipment is due July 2011.
